By Dan Barraclough | Updated: 3 March 2020

All businesses and most consumers are familiar with Yell. This is the UK’s biggest online directory and it’s where many people go to find businesses like yours. It’s a quick and easy way of finding services in your local area, without having to riffle through pages and pages of results in search engines.

What business owners might not know is that Yell has a new and improved business website design service. This service makes it incredibly easy for businesses to revamp their old website or create a new one from scratch, but is it any good?

Products and services

Yell provide a multitude of products and services for businesses of all sizes, including online listings, advertising, pay-per-click advertising, and videos.

In this review, however, we’re focusing on Yell's website design packages. There are three packages available, offering all businesses the opportunity of having a professional website with minimal effort involved.

Ecommerce bolt-ons

If you're an ecommerce entrepreneur – that is, you're looking to set up a website through which to sell your products or services online – Yell can help here, too.

On top of the above web design packages, Yell offers three ecommerce bolt-ons to turn your website into a money-maker. The right option for you will depend largely on how many products you're looking to list and sell:

Bolt-onMaximum productsUpfront cost (excluding VAT)Monthly fee (excluding VAT)
eCommerce Standard100£249£10
eCommerce Advanced1,500£249£20
eCommerce Ultimate70,000£249£30

The eCommerce Standard package enables you to:

  • Set up a secure payment gateway
  • Bulk upload products using a CSV file
  • Monitor your stock levels
  • Empower customers to track their orders in real-time

Meanwhile, the eCommerce Advanced package enables you to do all of the above, plus:

  • Receive notifications when stock levels drop below a certain limit, with different limits for different products
  • Sell digital products – such as videos, ebooks, and music files – up to a size limit of 1GB
  • Email customers to remind them to complete orders they have abandoned
  • Provide customers with discount coupons when they visit your website

And the eCommerce Ultimate bolt-on enables you to do all of the above, while also editing the content and design of your invoices to customers. This bolt-on also allows a larger digital products size limit of 10GB.

Don't fear if you already have a website that you're looking to turn into an online shop – Yell also offers a standalone ecommerce option that comes with all the features of the eCommerce Ultimate bolt-on, and can be added to your existing website domain.

Check your site

If you have a website, you may also wish to use the website checker service provided by Yell. Your website’s performance will be tested and Yell will provide a detailed report on their findings. You may decide that a complete overhaul is not necessary once you receive the result. The website checker is completely free to use and well worth taking the time to use during your visit.

Yell provide feedback on the current visibility in the search engines, mobile optimisation and the speed of the site. All of this information is invaluable for any business looking to enhance their online presence.

Excellent look and feel

The Yell website is easy to navigate. The information is laid out clearly, indicating the costs and providing contact information clearly on the page. Live chat is made available to those who visit the website, making it easy to ask questions and find out answers before making any buying decisions.

Examples of the latest website designs are shown on a landing page, with a link to the portfolio in clear view. It’s always a good idea to view past designs to see if they meet with your own expectations. Remember the website design will be personalised to your business, but the portfolio will give you an idea of what Yell is capable of.

Additional features of the website include reviews that have been left on TrustPilot by past customers. Information regarding the basics you can expect, ranging from free support to secure hosting and domain names are clearly shown.

The offerings from Yell are suited for all budgets. The lower end packages will result in a professional website but it will be down to the individual business to take care of tasks such as online competition strategies and monthly reporting. Those businesses with the larger website design budgets will find a more complete service taking a large majority of the tasks off their hands.

Ease of use

Yell are happy for businesses to express their ideas and requirements. Personalisation is provided even with the lower end website design package. The basics that come with web design are made available; the monthly or yearly fees may be additional costs that will need working into the budget.

The basics include: online training, website editor, web traffic analytics, secure hosting, mobile friendly, free support, mobile friendly design and search engine optimisation. A contact from Yell will discuss the project and the steps that are taken every step of the way.

Advantages and disadvantages

One of the main advantages businesses gain from using the website design service from Yell is ease of use. There’s no need to have any skills in website design or any knowledge in website management is required. This is an obvious advantage for a business looking to improve their online marketing and visibility.

  • Tailored packages are available to fit in with all requirements and budgets
  • Domain names and secure hosting
  • Businesses receive a fully managed website, no skills required.
  • Responsive website design
  • User friendly website editor with online training available to enhance in-house skills
  • Search engine optimised websites
  • Live support
  • Performance checks
  • Analytics and monthly reporting

The disadvantages include the lack of face to face contact with the designer. It’s also impossible to make your own edits to the design. Any changes need to be relayed to the designer who will take care of the edits for you. Photo shoots are available for those using the Elite package, but Premium and Premium Plus customers will need to provide their on-site images for the website. Personalised images are always preferable to using stock images.

Another disappointing factor is the lack of responsive website design for all packages. Mobile optimisation is included, but these days all websites need to be fully responsive to satisfy customers visiting via mobile devices.

Expert verdict

Overall, Yell provide a website design and build service that is simple to use and attainable for all businesses. They are willing to work with you to create the ideal website based on your own ideas. If you have no ideas and want someone else to take care of everything for you, Yell is happy to take the lead. Businesses can use as many or as little of the services provided based on their own requirements.
